Medigap / Supplemental (Parts F, G, N, etc.)
Medigap / Supplemental
Supplemental insurance (Medigap) policies work alongside your baseline coverage to absorb the remaining out-of-pocket hospital and doctor costs, keeping your healthcare expenses predictable.
Who it's for: Beneficiaries who want predictable medical bills and the freedom to see any doctor nationwide that accepts Medicare.
Why it matters: Medigap policies cover the "gaps" left by Original Medicare — such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles — protecting you from high medical bills.
Planning timeline: Best secured during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starting the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B.
Partner advantage: We compare lettered plans (Plan G, Plan N, etc.) across top-rated insurers to secure the lowest ongoing premium for identical coverage.
The Basics
Medigap policies are extra insurance policies purchased from private companies to fill the financial "gaps" in Original Medicare — such as the 20% coinsurance, copays, and deductibles. Because Original Medicare doesn't cap your out-of-pocket spending, a Medigap plan provides a predictable financial safety net.
The Details
Medigap policies are standardized secondary insurance policies purchased from private companies to absorb the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare leaves behind. Because Original Medicare does not pay for 100% of your medical bills and lacks a yearly spending limit, unexpected hospital stays or specialized treatments can result in high coinsurance and copayments. Medigap plans (designated by letters like Plan G or Plan N) pay for these remaining gaps, including your Part A and Part B coinsurance or deductibles. The federal government standardizes the core benefits for each lettered plan, meaning Plan G offers identical medical coverage regardless of which private insurance company you purchase it from.
Medigap Plan F: Plan F is only available to individuals who were eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020. Federal regulations phased out new sales of Plan F for anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 — if you were eligible prior to that date, you are grandfathered in and can still maintain or purchase Plan F. Plan F is historically known as the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plan available, covering 100% of all out-of-pocket gaps left behind by Original Medicare, including your Part A hospital deductible, hospital coinsurance, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, and — uniquely — even your annual Medicare Part B deductible. With Plan F, you pay your monthly premium and owe $0 out-of-pocket for any Medicare-approved services.
Medigap Plan G: Currently the most comprehensive, widely chosen Medicare Supplement plan available to new enrollees. It covers virtually all out-of-pocket gaps left behind by Original Medicare — including your Part A hospital deductible, hospital coinsurance, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and Part B excess charges. The only out-of-pocket cost you pay with standard Plan G is the annual Medicare Part B deductible; once that small, once-a-year deductible is met, Plan G covers 100% of your remaining Medicare-approved medical costs. Because Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, a Plan G policy provides identical medical coverage no matter which private insurance company you purchase it from.
Medigap Plan N: A popular, budget-friendly alternative for those who want strong financial protection against major medical bills while enjoying lower monthly premiums than Plan G. Plan N covers nearly all major Medicare gaps — including your Part A hospital deductible and your 20% Part B coinsurance. In exchange for a lower monthly premium, Plan N introduces modest cost-sharing: you are responsible for the annual Part B deductible, small office visit copays of up to $20, and emergency room copays of up to $50 that do not result in an inpatient hospital admission. Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges (extra amounts some doctors are legally allowed to charge above the Medicare-approved amount, though these are increasingly rare).
